Watch a Train Fan Spend 24 Hours on the Famed Sunset Limited Train
In this video, adventurer Mike from DownieLive on YouTube starts with a helpful tip. To make the best out of coach class, you have to get out of coach class! Then he breaks down his trip — 24 hours, two trains, and a six-hour layover. He cheekily says he probably wouldn’t recommend it but ultimately, he feels that everyone should experience travel by rail at least once in their lifetime.
You get a look inside the Amtrak station as the person over the loudspeaker guides passengers. Mike checks in with his train pass, gets a window seat, and spots the Magnolia Room, which is reserved for those traveling in a sleeper car. Then, the whole experience starts as he boards the train.
He shows off his seat in coach class, pointing out that there’s tons of legroom. Above the seat, there’s space for him to store his bags — he points out the ample room there as well. Finally, he settles in, showing off how there’s a space to put his legs up as he reclines his seat. “Not bad at all,” he says as he looks out to enjoy the passing scenery.
He moves on to show some more space on the train for luggage. If you’re traveling heavily, there’s even more room for you to store your belongings. Then, he walks over to the restrooms, pointing out that there’s a “ladies’ lounge.” Of course, he moves right past it to check out the other restroom. It’s what he expected — the basics in a compact space.

He walks through the observation deck, where seats face the window. He’s excited because there is hardly anyone on board, and he gets to enjoy himself thoroughly. He comments on the rainy weather and then heads off to get some coffee. He says the best place to work is the café because it’s quiet and wobbles less than other parts of the train.
This trip is from New Orleans, LA to Austin, TX. He shares the cost of this trip, and though it’s slower than other forms of transportation, he only paid $97. He then explains that to have a meal on the train, he has to make a reservation. As an employee walks by, he requests a specific time to eat in the dining car. Solo travelers typically get paired up with one another, which allows them to meet some new people!
